Toronto, February 17, 2017 – The 2017 Motorcycle Show has arrived at its penultimate stop this weekend. The cross-Canada tour lands in Toronto as the world’s top motorcycle brands showcase their newest products to enthusiasts at the Enercare Centre, Exhibition Place February 17th-19th.
The Show, celebrating its 30th anniversary is Ontario’s biggest motorcycle manufacturers’ event of the year. Much like its four-wheeled automotive equivalent, this is the first opportunity for bike fans to see the new 2017 motorcycle, ATV, side-by-side and scooter models that will be on sale at dealerships when the spring riding season rolls around. In addition to the 500+ bikes on display, there’s a wide range of new and exciting features, plus the latest in apparel, accessories and touring destinations, all under one roof in a space equal to three and a half football fields.
We had a chance to stop by, as we do every year, in order to pick out our most stylish motorcycles for 2017. There was a lot to choose from of course, but we feel that the #1 spot was something special. Here are some incredible works of engineering, art and style that are as great to look at as they are to ride:
#10 – 2017 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2, $28,499
Visually the carbon pattern insets and gold striping interwoven into the Tricolour paint mark the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2’s difference over the ‘stock’ machine and gold Marchesini wheels (reducing front/rear wheel inertia by 18/9%) are another clue. But the real differences – and what gives the Fireblade SP2 ultimate racing potential – lie inside the engine and, in turn, the parts that can be added from the two race kits that will be available.
While the 76mm bore is identical to the SP, the Fireblade SP2 cylinder head runs 1mm larger 31.5mm diameter intake valves and 1.5mm larger 25.5mm diameter exhaust valves, with 10°/12° included valve intake/exhaust included valve angles (from 11°/11°). The valve pitches are identical, maintaining cylinder head width.
It runs the same 13.0:1 compression ratio but uses valve shapes and combustion chambers optimised for efficiency. Elongated spark plugs and a water jacket tightly wrapped around the combustion chambers improve cooling; this technology is derived directly from Honda’s RC213V MotoGP machine.
The pistons use an exclusive crown design with heat treatment that strengthens the area around the piston boss, which itself employs a 2.5mm shorter (and 8g lighter per cylinder) piston pin. Ready to house high-lift camshafts the outer diameter of the valve lifter has grown 2mm to 28mm, while total height and thickness have been reduced saving weight.
The Fireblade SP2’s electronic control devices are the same as those of the SP, with exclusive SP2 settings. For both race and general circuit use, a racing kit will be available.
#9 – 2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber, $13,000
The new 2017 Triumph Bonneville Bobber has absolutely peerless authenticity. A genuine Bonneville and factory custom Bobber that’s both iconic and authentic. Stripped to its purest essence it delivers all the hallmarks of a real bobber, with clean lines and low stance, single seat, wide flat bars, minimal bodywork, wide rear wheel and that all important hard tail look.
An all-new chassis, suspension and frame deliver a supremely confident, dynamic and comfortable ride. All electronic components are hidden from view so as not to compromise the bike’s clean lines, and both the seat and clock position can be adjusted to suit the rider for class-leading comfort and control.
At the heart of the Bobber is a category-leading, high-torque (HT) Bonneville 1200cc engine with a dedicated Bobber tune for even more torque and power low down and a beautiful brushed stainless steel exhaust with twin skin ‘slash cut’ peashooter silencers.
#8 – 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000R, $21,899
It has been three decades, with more than a million editions sold, since the GSX-R line was born. And a decade and a half has elapsed since the first GSX-R1000 transformed the open sportbike class forever. Now, the 2017 GSX-R1000R is redefining what it means to be The King of Sportbikes.
This motorcycle’s chassis forms the lightest, the most compact, the most aerodynamic and the best-handling GSX-R1000 ever. Cradled in the new aluminum frame is an all-new engine that uses an exclusive Variable Valve Timing and Ride-by-Wire throttle bodies for a wide spread of power while delivering smooth and precise throttle response.
Using an Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) the GSX-R1000’s advanced electronics package includes selectable performance modes so the motorcycle enhances and fine tunes rider inputs. The six-axis IMU lets the GSX-R1000R recognize its position on the street or race track to help the rider achieve an extraordinary level of riding performance.
Up front, new style BREMBO T-drive brake rotors grasped by Monobloc calipers provide strong, controlled braking, while the precise and smooth SHOWA suspension keeps the sticky Bridgestone RS10 tires in touch with the road. All of this forward-looking motorcycle technology is covered in all-new, wind tunnel-developed bodywork that’s uniquely GSX-R.
#7 – 2017 Harley-Davidson Road King Special, $26,499
You can see it coming from a mile away. Big and dramatic like a locomotive rolling through a train yard at midnight. Blacked-out from its headlight nacelle front forks and new wheels to its powerful Milwaukee-Eight™ engine, headers and exhaust. With new mini-ape handlebars that pull you up and forward for an upright stance that commands attention. Stripped-down styling and stretched saddlebags for a slammed profile that’s right here, right now. When you take to the road on the new 2017 Harley-Davidson Road King Special, you don’t just rule the road. You own it.
#6 – 2017 Indian Chief Vintage, $24,999
It may look like something from the past, but the 2017 Indian Chief Vintage is all about the future. Behind those genuine-leather saddle bags and whitewall tires lurks something unexpected: progress. A keyless ignition, cruise control and a quick-release windshield for cruising around town. So fire up that chromed-out Thunder Stroke 111 engine and discover how sophisticated a simpler time can be.
#5 – 2017 BMW R Nine T Racer, $12,420
The all-new 2017 BMW R nineT Racer lets you relive the era of legendary superbikes. Far removed from obsessive retro romanticism, but rather on a customisable bike with innovative technology and in customary BMW Motorrad quality. Crouched behind the striking half fairing, both hands tight on the low-slung handlebar grips, you can feel the powerful boxer work, you hear its unmistakeable roar.
And you already know: only a strong character can hold the racing line. On the road, as in life. The design of the R nineT Racer unmistakably takes inspiration from the 70s motorsports. The elongated proportions extend through the entire design and promise pure acceleration. The distinctive half-shell fairing, the tank and the seat shape the slim silhouette. The long wheelbase and the low-slung handlebars positioned far to the front complete the low, sporty seating position. Then the high-set, far back footrests: as a rider, you literally lie on the bike. Surrounded by the white bodywork, which clearly stands out against the dark driving parts and technology. Even the tape that runs from the front to the rear in the BMW motorsport colours seems to constantly call for the next acceleration.
#4 – 2017 Kawasaki Ninja H2R, $61,200
The launching point for the development of the 2017 Kawasaki Ninja H2R was a strong desire to offer riders something they had never before experienced. The bike needed to deliver intense acceleration and an ultra-high top speed, coupled with supersport-level circuit performance. The H2R has fully encapsulated what it is like to ride a Kawasaki Ninja. We kind of cheated on this one because although it’s insanely stylish, the bike is not street legal. Other 2017 Kawasaki Ninjas however are.
#3 – 2017 Aprilia RSV4 RF, $TBD
The 2017 Aprilia RSV4 RF evolves radically to continue being one of the best superbikes ever. The result of an extraordinary and winning project, born out of Aprilia’s successful racing experience, it’s more than one second per lap faster than before. Thanks to the new Öhlins suspension systems, the new braking system and the new APRc electronic controls package that includes Cornering ABS and the Downshifter. The 201 hp Euro 4 engine combines with a seven-time world superbike champion chassis architecture.
#2 – 2017 Moto Guzzi MGX-21 Flying Fortress, $23,990
The 2017 Moto Guzzi MGX-21 is an amazing motorcycle that opens a new way to touring with its strikingly modern look and pleasant riding experience that is typical of Moto Guzzi. Aerodynamic harmony comes from the batwing fairing that wraps around the handlebars and is topped by sporty plexiglass double flyscreen. The comfortable and spacious main seat has an ergonomic design that ensures maximum comfort for riders of different statures. The sidebags have a significant cargo capacity, a dedicated inner bag and are perfectly integrated with the lines of the motorcycle while not compromising its style. The forged aluminum wide handlebar is designed to provide a commanding riding position. The powerful 1400 cc motor’s power and torque ensures maximum performance to make every trip memorable. The electronics such as the dedicated infotainment system, cruise control, ABS, traction control and engine maps, make the trip the best part of the journey.
#1 – 2017 Ducati 1299 Superleggera, $80,000
Ducati takes the world of Supersport road bikes to a completely new level by presenting the 2017 Ducati 1299 Superleggera, the first standard street bike with carbon fibre frame, swinging arm, subframe and wheels. The 1299 Superleggera is the greatest expression of engineering, technology and performance ever put into mass production by a motorcycle manufacturer.
The quintessence of Ducati is exclusive in everything, even in the limited number of these motorcycles produced: only 500, for a lucky few Ducatistas. The fairing, also made of carbon fibre, is just the tip of the iceberg of a unique project that only a brand like Ducati with racing in its DNA could accomplish. In fact, under the fairing hides the most powerful version of the Superquadro. With its 215 horsepower*, the Desmodromic EURO 4 engine on the 1299 Superleggera is the most powerful twin-cylinder ever produced, representing the best of Ducati technology. The exclusivity of the 1299 Superleggera is underlined by the new electronic package that uses an inertial platform system with six axes (6D IMU – Inertial Measurement Unit) to manage the electronic controls that on this bike rise to a level of primacy. This system has made it possible to further develop the Ducati Traction Control EVO (DTC EVO) presented on the 1299 Panigale S Anniversario thanks to the introduction of the Ducati Slide Control (DSC) which ensures even better performance when exiting corners.
The 1299 Superleggera is also the first Ducati Superbike to be equipped with Ducati Power Launch (DPL), as well as the Engine Brake Control (EBC) already present on previous versions, reaching the incredible dry weight of 156 kg.
